Should the robot be with a Front Wheel Drive or a Rear Wheel Drive to make it more precise? The answer is - front wheel will probably give you better results, but the wheel drive is not the most important thing. In this video tutorial on the LEGO Mindstorms Robots, we will do a few experiments to discuss the influence of the wheel drive on the precision of the movement.
How to align the wheels and how much should you push for this solution?
In this tutorial, we add another mission to our current program. This mission is - hanging the Gecko from the FIRST LEGO League Animal Allies.
Think of an attachment that leaves the Gecko on the mission model. Don't use the robot attachment that we already have. Just the box robot and the gecko. Nothing should support the Gecko when it is hanged on the mission model.
Connect the attachment to the box robot and find the correct number of rotations of the middle motor that would bring the robot up and forward and would attach it to the mission model.
There were a few problems with the 40 teeth gears that we were using. Let's list some of them
This program is for Lifter - an attachment for SUV Box Robot and Into Orbits M09–Strength Exercise material. In this program you may need to change the values in the Wait - Color Sensor blocks if the program is not working properly. The program ses also Gyro sensor, that mean that you have to check do you have a gyro drift. If you have such, turn of the robot and start it again. After turning it on, do not touch the robot until it is completely loaded and ready to run. In that way you are going to cancel the gyro drift.
After the first box robot course and its enormous success, we decided to build a second box robot. This time with fewer parts and with only three motors. The EV3 set comes with one medium motor and this robot will be easier for new teams. It is also lighter and more simple. Take the course and learn the ideas that we have in mind in simplifying a robot. Use this course with students and try to experiment to make the attachments and construction even simpler.
Robotics competitions with LEGO Mindstorms robots are very popular. One of the more popular types of robot constructions that are build for such competitions are the so-called "Box Robots". The Sports Utility Vehicle box robot is the new marvelous box robot that we've created. It is designed for teams that would like to learn how to build balanced, stable and working robot chassis following our box principle. It is smaller and easier to build than box robot 1 and it is more simple than box robot 2.
The main advantages of this robot compared to previous box robots are
- motors in the right direction, so when rotating the motor forward, the robot moves forward.
- it is much easier to attach attachments. There are 4 different gears on which you could attach attachments.
- it has a large clearance - which means that it could move over obstacles.
Of course, it has a Gyro and two Color Sensors. Not only that, but we have all the cables shown in the construction.
The SUV Box robot is design to be used with a Gyro sensor and two Color Sensors for alignment. It is not working well for following lines as the sensors are very high and they are very high to allow for high clearance of the chassis. If you need to follow lines we recommend the Dominator X-Y robot

We had a couple of minutes before starting another robot and we just came up with this robot. If you would like to build a Box Robot, but don't have enough parts this is a good construction that you could learn from. It has a frame. It has three motors. You can add attachments at the top.
The first part of a box robot chassis for robotics competitions. The robot is quite large and this is why we split it into two parts - to make it easier to construct it. This is the second part.
The robot is built with LEGO Mindstorms EV3, with an additional part for the walls used in the second part.
