Why chain treads?

Why not? While wheels are useful on the road, they get easily damaged offroad, and many obstacles can stop a vehicle on wheels. Chain treads on the other hand can overcome many obstacles, and they distribute the vihicles weight more evenly on the ground. Due to that, the chain treads are used on larger vihicles like bulldozers, excavators, tanks, and tractors.
