Introduction

These are tips and tricks of how the missions could be accomplished. We are not releasing a review and solutionс for the missions until the season is over and on this page we've shared how the missions could be accomplished. Think of it from the point of experience. If you have 6 years of experience you've seen enough of the competitions and different teams and you will be able to quickly come up with an "approach" for accomplishing the missions. But if you lack this experience it is good to take a moment and to review what were previous missions that are kind of similar and that you can use as an inspiration.

Note that this guide is still not complete and we will be adding more missions to it

FLLCasts Tip

M2 Oil Platform is a complex mission consisting of two steps. First the robot needs to load the oil to the fuel truck by lifting the lever of the oil platform and delivering the truck to the base. In the next part of the mission the robot has to deliver the truck to the fuel station area. The easiest way to complete the mission might be to take the truck back to the base right after the robot fills the truck with fuel using a lifting attachment. The robot can push the truck to the southeast base. When the robot returns to base it can be equipped with the attachment holding the truck and push it to the fuel station. You are not forced to accomplish the mission in two consecutive runs so you have to decide in which run to move the truck to the fuel station.

FLLCasts Tip

Energy storage is very interesting mission. You need to unload energy units in the energy storage. This can be done with a passive attachment - it can carry the energy units in a tray with a moving bottom. The bottom must have a pin that contacts with the energy storage so while the attachment moves above the energy storage, it's floor stays stationary and the energy units fall into the storage. Than the robot needs to pull the tray under the energy storage with an active hook. After that the energy stored in the tray needs to be taken out. The easiest way is to lift the tray and place it back down next to the stored energy.

FLLCasts Tip

Solar Farm mission is an easy one. There are at least two ways you can accomplish it. The first option is for the robot to push the energy units from their location.

The second is to use an active container attachment to pull the units in the left home area. The container needs to fall over the units so they can be dragged on the mat. The attachment needs to be active because the robot needs collect the units two times due to the distance between the right unit and the left couple of units.

FLLCasts Tip

This mission is easier that other missions from previous competitions where we had to communicate with the other team. It also is part of the guided mission and there is a program and video provided by FIRST for accomplishing this mission. Having said that the mission is a pull, push mission. Reach the missions model, position next to it and pull.

Smart grid is an easy mission, that requires cooperation in order to get the full 30 points. Before the match you can ask the opposite team if they are doing this mission and assess if it is worth it for your robot to do it. As this mission is at the top of the field, it can be worth it to skip it if you have a strategy that revolves around the bottom part.

The mission itself requires the robot to pull a part so that the "orange connector" (the orange hand) rises, as shown in the pictures. That can be done by simply following the line while having a bent part pull it passively. You can also have a locking type mechanism if you would prefer to approach the mission from the front. Lastly, you can always have a motor that can pull the part pretty easily.

FLLCasts Tip

Hybrid car is a bit of a tricky mission. To achieve the full 20 points, you need the hybrid unit to be in the car and the car to not touch the ramp. To do that the robot can lift the lever at the back of the mission. That can be done with one easy movement of a motor, or even a passive attachment.

The tricky part is getting the hybrid unit to consistently fall into the car. That can be done with a some guiding beams for the energy unit or you can also take the unit from the mission in one run and then return it in the car in another.

Another problem is the car's position after it leaves the ramp. Depending on where it stops, the car might impede the run to the nearest missions. You can make an attachment that stops the car from moving too far. For advanced builders and programmers, we recommend building an attachment that can take both the car and the hybrid unit to either base. There one of the technicians can insert the unit in the car. That way we can solve both problems relatively easily.

FLLCasts Tip

The Wind Turbine mission is a great source of energy units for other missions. For the mission itself you don't need to collect the energy units, you can leave them anywhere and as long as they don't touch the mission model you will get the 30 points. To complete the mission you technically do not have to engage with the push mechanism, but the energy units are in a very awkward spot so we suggest pushing the mechanism three times. Collect the energy units so you can use them in other missions by using simple basket-like attachment that catches them as they fall out of the mission model.

FLLCasts Tip

Watch television is an easy mission that can grant you potentially 20 points if the robot executes it correctly. To complete the mission, the robot needs to push the sofa closer to the television. That way the television screen will rise and the energy unit will fall out. The trick with this mission is for the robot to push it slowly. That way the energy unit should end up in the green television slot and not fall out on the field.

If it still falls out, you can make a barrier behind the unit so that it can't go further than needed.

FLLCasts Tip

Power plant is a complex mission that can potentially give you up to 25 points. To get the full amount of points the robot needs to release all three energy units from the mission model. For the front one, the robot needs to push the front lever down, but for the side ones, the robot needs to lift the blocker up. Both of these motions can be achieved with a passive attachment using angled parts in order to push and lift the correct parts of the mission model when the robot moves forward. If this doesn't work for you, you can always use a single motor attachment that can push and lift.

You can also collect the energy units to be used in other missions, but the units in this mission are very spread apart and hard to collect, so we would recommend not to. However, if you need them, we recommend to collect only the one at the front while doing the mission itself. The ones at the sides will roll close to each launch area and can be collected easily on a later run if needed.

Score

  • If the energy unit is no longer touching the hydroelectric dam: 20

Rules

FLLCasts Tip

Hydroelectric dam is a relatively easy mission that grants 20 points for removing the energy unit. The mission itself is right next to the left launch area so it can be done in a short run. To do the mission itself, the robot needs to lift a lever that releases a water unit down to spin the turbine wheel that releases the energy unit. You can do that either with a passive attachment with a bent part or with a simple lifting motor attachment.

This energy unit, while only one, is easy to collect with a passive attachment that is positioned so the energy unit falls into it. If you need one energy unit for other missions, we recommend collecting this one.

In front of the Hydroelectric dam mission there is a looped water unit which we recommend the robot collects, because it is used in M12 Water Reservoir.

Look for inspiration:

M12. Water reservoir

Water from the river above the dam is stored in the reservoir. Water from lower down the river can also be pumped back up to fill the reservoir at times when there is excess electricity to use.

Place the looped water units from the river above and below the dam into the water reservoir or onto the red hooks.

  • If a looped water unit is completely in the water reservoir, touching the mat: 5 EACH
  • If a looped water unit is placed on a single red hook: 10 EACH HOOK

The loop on the looped water unit may extend out of the water reservoir.

Looped water units in the water reservoir or on red hooks may not be touching team equipment at the end of the match.

Rules

FLLCasts Tip

Water reservoir is a complex mission that can potentially net you 25 points. To achieve that, you need to gather three looped water units, one in front of the Hydroelectric dam and two after the water reservoir. We recommend gathering these while doing other missions so you can setup their placement better.

The mission itself requires the robot to put these looped water units either in the water reservoir or on the red hooks. Those placed in the reservoir grant your team 5 points each and those on the hooks grant 10 points, but you can only have one water unit per hook and thus you can only get 20 points from the hooks.

One strategy is to ignore the hooks completely and just place the three water units in the reservoir. That way your team gains 15 points, only 10 less than the maximum. That can be done by having them hang on a beam or axle that is attached to a motor and then dropping them. If you want something more complex, you can also make a passive attachment with a rubber band that releases the looped water units.

If you want to make the full 25 points out of this mission, the robot will have to place two of the water units on the two hooks, but beware that this attachment will need a lot of work to do the mission reliably. In order to place the looped water units on the hooks, you can use two axles that hold each loop and the robot needs to maneuver so that the hooks end up in between the axles. These axles would also need to be attached to a motor so they can be lowered for the loops to get caught in the hooks and come off when the robot drives backwards. You can also try to place the loops horizontally because the hooks are at an angle. Then have an attachment that drops them on the hooks.
